چکیده
Many connectionist approaches to musical expectancy and music composition let the question of ``Whatnext?'' overshadow the equally important question of ``When next?''. One cannot escape the latter question, one oftemporal structure, when considering the perception of musical meter. We view the perception of metrical structure asa dynamic process where the temporal organization of external musical events synchronizes, or entrains, a listener'sinternal processing mechanisms. This article introduces a novel connectionist unit, based upon a mathematical model ofentrainment, capable of phaseand frequency-locking to periodic components of incoming rhythmic patterns.Networks of these units can self-organize temporally structured responses to rhythmic patterns. The resulting networkbehavior embodies the perception of metrical structure. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications ofour approach for theories of metrical structure and musical expectancy. Citation-Based Retrieval for Scholarly Publications
queries against a database of stored, indexed documents. However, many of these search engines have proved ineffective for searching scholarly publications accurately. Researchers have developed autonomous citation indexing agents, such as CiteSeer,4 to search computer-science-related literature online. These agents extract citation information from the literature and store it in a database. Ci...
متن کاملDiscovering Relevant Scientific Literature on the Web
Due to the ease of electronic dissemination, the world of scientific literature on the Web has grown rapidly, becoming a large, highly current database of published research. This acceleration of publication has exacerbated the difficulty researchers face keeping up to date on relevant new research trends. We believe that automatic tools to help researchers keep up with the latest relevant publ...
متن کاملInformation Retrieval and Extraction from the Web: the CROSSMARC approach
The paper presents the CROSSMARC approach for the complex task of identification of interesting web sites and web pages and the extraction of information from them. This task is hard because most of the information on the Web today is in the form of HTML documents, which are designed for presentation purposes and not for automatic extraction systems. This task becomes even harder in a multiling...
متن کاملTowards Next Generation CiteSeer: A Flexible Architecture for Digital Library Deployment
CiteSeer began as the first search engine for scientific literature to incorporate Autonomous Citation Indexing, and has since grown to be a well-used, open archive for computer and information science publications, currently indexing over 730,000 academic documents. However, CiteSeer currently faces significant challenges that must be overcome in order to improve the quality of the service and...
متن کاملA Comparison of On-Line Computer Science Citation Databases
This paper examines the difference and similarities between the two on-line computer science citation databases DBLP and CiteSeer. The database entries in DBLP are inserted manually while the CiteSeer entries are obtained autonomously via a crawl of the Web and automatic processing of user submissions. CiteSeer’s autonomous citation database can be considered a form of self-selected on-line sur...
